Caithness Rural Transport was set up in 1999, and we are now on our 26th year of providing a community transport door-to-door service to Caithness. We only operate in Caithness and we have 4 paid drivers along with our amazing volunteers. We currently have 260 members, and in 2024, we moved 9,077 passengers, covering 93,294 miles.
Did you know that community groups can also hire our mini buses for use across Scotland, and in 2024, our buses were hired a total of 199 times to cover 17,715 miles.
Caithness Rural Transport provides a 7 day a week service (subject to availability) that is designed for people living in rural areas, regardless of age who meet our rural service qualifying criteria, and our town service is open to elderly and disabled people who meet our town service qualifying criteria. The service can be used for shopping, visiting friends, social functions, medical appointments etc. The driver will be there to assist you with the steps or wheelchair access to the vehicle and all our drivers are Midas (Minibus Driver Awareness) trained.
Our vehicles are all wheelchair adapted and are based in Wick, Thurso, Halkirk, and Dunbeath. Our mini buses, ranging from 4 seats up to 16 seats, are also available for hire to community groups.
Our fleet consists of a mixture of diesel and fully electric mini buses and these undergo a safety inspection every 10 weeks.
We charge an annual membership fee of £15 or £5 for a short term fee and a mileage charge per person per journey is applied.
For each journey we charge £3.50 for the first mile, £4.50 for the 2nd mile, then 50p per mile thereafter.
For community group hires, we charge £20 for the first 15 miles, then £1 per mile thereafter. Fuel is included within the hire price.
Please note, we do not operate like a taxi or bus service. We cannot be called up like a taxi, nor can you hop onto a passing CRT Minibus. All journeys must be pre-booked in advance. We can also only transport eligible people who meet certain qualifying criteria.
To qualify for our service you must be a paid up member of Caithness Rural Transport as well as meeting the qualifying criteria below
Town Service: You must be elderly or infirm and unable to access a normal vehicle, taxi or public transport service due to your condition.
Rural Service: We offer a door-to-door service using adapted vehicles for individuals facing transport challenges, regardless of age. You are eligible to use the service if you live in Caithness and – have no access to transport or reasonable public transport options and are elderly or disabled and require accessible transport.
