What is the PVG Scheme and do I need it?

What is the PVG SCheme?

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme is a membership scheme for people working with children or protected adults.

Why might I need this?

It's a legal requirement to join the scheme if you're carrying out a regulated role with these groups.

How do I know if I need this?

Use the button below to check to see if the role you are enquiring about requires a PVG.

The tool should only be used as a guide. It’s to help you determine if a role needs PVG scheme membership. If you're still unsure, contact Disclosure Scotland.

What are regulated roles?

If a role is regulated, the person carrying it out needs PVG scheme membership; however, It is not possible to give a complete list of regulated roles, because roles change.

There are some roles where it is clear it is regulated though. These are set out in the lists below.

These lists are not exhaustive. You still need to have contact with children or protected adults to meet the criteria for a regulated role.
